Procrastination

I recently read a few articles discussing how procrastination was a form of a passive aggressive behavior.  It discussed the stubborn part of us that says “No, I’m not going to give that the time or energy it deserves.” Websters says passive aggressiveness is characterized by an indirect resistance to a demand.  So if you are faced with some procrastination in your life lets dig a little deeper.

First, let’s think of all the emotions you have about this particular issue or project you are procrastinating on completing.  What are you trying to avoid or ignore?  Whether it is fear, anxiety, uncertainty, or depression….get these feelings written out.

Next, evaluate your thinking.  Procrastination is often combined with a lot of negative thinking.  This is where you might get derailed.  Train your brain to catch this pattern of thinking that leads to your resistance.  Are your unrelenting standards running things?  Predicting a negative outcome before you even start?  Be clear on your foundational thoughts and feelings before you move on.

Now, it is big picture time.  Why is this important?  What value will come from completing this task?  Some good, big “why’s” will lead to more “wanting” which often leads to the effort you need to push through procrastination and resistance.  John Maxwell reminds us “It’s difficult to remain engaged in anything if you have not found a way to value and appreciate the process”.

Lastly, discipline.  Motivation may get you going but discipline will keep you growing.  Discipline is the practice of training.  Will you train yourself to quit and increase your negative self talk about how you never finish anything OR will you train yourself to pull back, understand the root of your hesitance and then make a decision.  Either it is truly worth it to you or it isn’t.  You get to decide!
